At the beginning of 2024, European Historic Houses, in partnership with Airbnb, launched the European Sustainable Heritage Award to honour exceptional efforts in preserving and restoring historic properties. The award ceremony, held on February 6th at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, recognised private owners who have contributed to sustainable heritage conservation. Hosted by MEP Ibán García del Blanco, the event highlighted the importance of preserving cultural heritage while promoting environmental sustainability.
The expert panel, including EHH Board Member Stefania Pignatelli, MEP Pernille Weiss, architect Anders Brüel, and Airbnb host Gersende Raudot Genet de Chatenay, selected three finalists for their innovative projects in sustainable heritage. Mr. Giles Keating of Athelhampton House, UK, emerged as the winner for his zero-carbon emission energy system, transforming his 540-year-old property. The judges praised his efforts to reduce carbon emissions to zero while fostering local cultural and business partnerships, which enhanced the visitor experience.
Two runners-up were also recognised for their remarkable contributions. Mr. Alexander Baring of Lambay Castle, Ireland, modernised the castle’s energy and waste systems, cutting diesel consumption and improving tourism. Meanwhile, Mrs. Sophia Emmanuel of the Kambones 1615 house in Greece preserved her family’s historic home, integrating sustainable technologies like solar lighting. These finalists not only conserved their properties but also revitalised their local communities through cultural and tourism-based initiatives.
